April Maintenance - Midwest
Spring has sprung. Time to assess winter damage and prep for the growing season.
April in the Midwest is when you finally get to see what winter did to your house. The snowโs gone, the ground is thawing, and everything that was hidden under a white blanket is now staring you in the face.
This Monthโs Focus
1. Full Exterior Inspection
Walk your entire property. Look at everything.
- Roof: Missing shingles? Damaged flashing? Storm damage?
- Gutters: Still attached? Sagging anywhere?
- Siding: Cracks, holes, or peeling paint?
- Foundation: New cracks? Water staining?
Difficulty: ๐ง | Time: 1-2 hours
Something look wrong? Diagnose exterior issues โ
2. Service Your AC
Before you need it, get it checked. The last thing you want is a broken AC on the first 90-degree day.
- Replace or clean filters
- Clear debris from outdoor unit
- Test the system
Difficulty: ๐ง๐ง | Time: 30 minutes (DIY) or schedule a pro
Need a pro? Find an HVAC contractor โ
3. Check Window and Door Screens
Youโll want fresh air soon. Make sure your screens are intact.
- Look for holes and tears
- Check that frames arenโt bent
- Clean screens with mild soap and water
Difficulty: ๐ง | Time: 30 minutes
4. Prep Your Lawn Equipment
Mower, trimmer, edgerโtheyโve been sitting all winter.
- Fresh gas (old gas causes problems)
- Check oil levels
- Sharpen mower blades
- Replace spark plugs if needed
Difficulty: ๐ง๐ง | Time: 1-2 hours
5. Clean Gutters Again
Yes, again. Spring debris (seeds, buds, leftover leaves) clogs them fast.
Difficulty: ๐ง๐ง | Time: 1-2 hours
6. Test Outdoor Faucets
Turn them on. Check for leaks. If no water comes out or it sprays weird, you might have freeze damage.
Difficulty: ๐ง | Time: 10 minutes
Pipe issues? Diagnose plumbing problems โ
The Bottom Line
April is reconnaissance and prep work. Youโre assessing damage from winter and getting ready for the active outdoor season ahead. Donโt skip the AC serviceโyouโll regret it in July.
