November Maintenance - Northeast
Winter arrives. Final preparations and shift to indoor focus.
November in the Northeast: Winter Is Here
November in the Northeast isn’t fooling around. The leaves are down, temperatures are dropping fast, and the first snow is a real possibility. This is the month you finish winter prep and hunker down.
If you’ve stayed on top of fall maintenance, November is mostly about final checks and shifting focus indoors. If you’ve been procrastinating, this is your last chance before cold weather makes everything harder and more expensive.
This Month’s Tasks
1. Final Leaf Cleanup 🔧🔧
Time: 2-4 hours
Get the leaves off your lawn and out of your gardens before snow covers them.
Rake or mulch leaves. Remove debris from planting beds. Pay special attention to leaves piled against the house—these invite pests and moisture problems. Clean leaves out of window wells and corners where they accumulate.
Leaves left under snow become a soggy mess that damages grass and shelters pests.
2. Heating System Monitoring 🔧
Time: 15 minutes weekly
Your heating system is running regularly now. Keep an eye on it.
Monitor for unusual sounds or smells. Check that all rooms are heating evenly. Change filters monthly. Watch your energy bills—a sudden spike could indicate a problem.
If something seems wrong, call immediately. No-heat emergencies in November are no joke.

3. Check for Drafts 🔧
Time: 1 hour
Cold weather reveals drafty spots. Find and fix them.
Walk around your home on a cold, windy day. Feel around windows, doors, outlets on exterior walls, and anywhere pipes or wires enter. Use incense or a candle to see air movement. Seal any gaps you find.
Drafts waste energy and make rooms uncomfortable. Fix them now.
4. Prevent Ice Dams 🔧🔧
Time: 1-2 hours assessment
Ice dams cause major damage in Northeast winters. Take steps to prevent them.
Check attic insulation for gaps and thin spots. Verify that attic vents aren’t blocked. Consider adding insulation if the attic is under-insulated. Make sure bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans vent outside, not into the attic.
Ice dams form when heat escapes through the roof, melting snow that refreezes at the edges. Good insulation and ventilation prevent them.
5. Service Humidifier 🔧
Time: 30 minutes
Winter air is dry. If you have a whole-house humidifier, make sure it’s working.
Clean or replace the pad/media. Check that water is flowing. Set the humidity level appropriately—35-45% is usually good. Too much humidity causes condensation; too little causes dry skin and static electricity.
Comfortable humidity makes your home feel warmer at lower temperatures.
6. Protect Pipes 🔧🔧
Time: 1-2 hours
Before deep cold arrives, protect vulnerable pipes.
Insulate pipes in unheated spaces—basements, crawl spaces, garages, attics. Install heat tape on pipes that have frozen before. Know where your main water shutoff is. Have a plan for dealing with frozen pipes.
Frozen pipes that burst cause catastrophic water damage. Prevention is worth the effort.

7. Snow Equipment Prep 🔧
Time: 1 hour
Get your snow removal equipment ready.
Service snow blowers—change oil, check spark plugs, verify operation. Buy ice melt and sand. Locate shovels. Check that tools are in good condition. Know your plan for snow removal.
Being prepared makes snow events manageable instead of miserable.
8. Indoor Project Time 🔧
Time: Whatever you can give it
Winter is coming. Plan indoor projects.
What have you been putting off? Painting? Organizing? Repairs? Winter is for getting these things done while outdoor work is impossible.
The Bottom Line
November in the Northeast is about finishing winter prep and settling in. Get the final leaves cleaned up, protect your pipes, and make sure your heating system is running smoothly. Check for drafts and ice dam risk. The ground will freeze soon and snow will fly. Be ready, then settle in for the season.
